Children and Their Afterschool Hours

A survey of parents across Massachusetts found that:

  • 220,000 school children take care of themselves most days after school.
  • 520,000 children have parents who want more after-school programming, with parents citing the following barriers: not enough programs (51%), programs are not affordable (34%), and the quality of existing programs is not high (31%).
  • 69% of parents want school-based enrichment activities available for all children until 6:00 PM, and believe additional tax dollars should be dedicated to create these programs.
